College Power Class

  1. The Vision

    Craft a Vision
Many students wait until they enter college to begin the process of choosing a major and a career path. This strategy almost inevitably leads to frequent major changes and delayed graduation. This workshop is designed to help students craft a vision of who they would like to become and explore various educational and career paths that will help them get there. Students will also learn the steps to choosing the college or university that will best meet their needs.

  2. The Plan

    Make a Plan
After the student has created a vision for their future, he or she will begin the process of mapping the steps required to get there. This workshop will introduce students to online college course catalogs and teach them how to map out their college schedules effectively. Students who still have a year or more of high school remaining will explore concurrent enrollment and advanced placement options that will help them fulfill university requirements while still in high school.

  3. The System

    Work the System
College is about learning, but it is also about jumping through the right hoops. This class will introduce students to the seven most important college "systems": the administrative, grading, study, maintenance, social, financial, and motivational systems. Students learn how to plan for a balanced college experience by understanding the academic, social, and career preparation opportunities available.

  4. The Toolbox

    Get The Tools
College requires a whole new set of skills that most students acquire only by extensive (and often painful) trial and error. The skills that served a student well in high school usually fall short in college. This class introduces students to the skills they will need in college level classes which include:

    • Speed Reading
    • College Writing
    • College Note-taking
    • College Test taking
  5. The Possibilites

    Explore the Possibilities
This class, which is designed for parents and students to attend together, will allow students to discuss the plans made in this class with their parents as well as make a plan to pay for college expenses. Students and parents will craft a college cost "contract" which will detail the responsibilities of the student and make clear what the student can expect from their parents. We will talk in depth about scholarships and what students at every age level can do to prepare for scholarship opportunities.
